The “D” Word

diet defined
The word “Diet” as a verb is defined as: “Restricting oneself to small amounts or special kinds of food in order to lose weight.” We understand this right? But what isn’t fully understood is what is the right “diet” to follow. Well, first of all, everyone is different and what works for one person might not work for someone else. Trying new diets can be overwhelming and then you might just end up giving up. The truly best diet out there is eating a healthy, well balanced diet of the following:

  • PLENTY of veggies – eat tons of green, red, orange, yellow, purple and white veggies. Variety is key!
  • Lean proteins/meats – if you’re a vegetarian you should eat plenty of beans, tofu, tempeh or other veg protein options.
  • Fruit – Try a variety of fruits for the best health. There are so many nutrients in fruits and veggies, why not try as many kinds as you can.
  • Whole Grains – This includes brown rice, quinoa, millet, bulgar, amaranth.
  • Healthy Fats – yes, there are “healthy fats”, see our post on bad fats vs. good fats for more details on this.

There are many people who can’t just change their diets, they need to be guided and told what to eat. It’s only natural that this would happen. We all have busy lives – a job, kids, friends, family, school…. whatever it is in your life, I understand you’re busy. But neglecting your health isn’t a good thing to do in the long run. There are diets out there that can help you. We have apps for your smart phones that guide people through specific diets, giving them recipes and a way to track their weight and see their progress with weight loss. Some even have a support chat feature where you can chat with me about the diet and I’ll answer you personally through the app. One healthy diet I can recommend is the 17 Day Diet, and we have an app for it. It’s a long term healthy lifestyle change type of diet. It has 4 cycles of 17 days each you go through. It’s meant to confuse your metabolism and get your body in fat burning mode which is what you want! You will never starve on this diet. You can eat unlimited proteins and veggies in the first 17 days! We also have tons of recipes for this diet included in the app. And don’t forget about the in-app support chat, where you can ask me anything, any time.
healthy life

One last note on losing weight and getting healthy: Not only is diet important, but exercise is so vital to your health and can help burn fat. Getting yourself started on a routine of working out might be a bit daunting at first. Joining a gym might be helpful to some. Usually gyms will give you a complementary training session where they show you around and discuss your goals with you and get you on the right track. Some people like to start by just taking walks around their neighborhood or swimming in their pools. Whatever it is you choose, make sure you keep your exercises fresh, meaning you try new things, move your body in new ways on a regular basis. Our bodies will get used to a routine and can just stay in the same form rather than burning fat like we’d like it if we don’t mix it up a little. If you go to the gym, try a new group class if they have them or a new machine to workout on to mix it up. Also, weight lifting is so awesome for your health, I suggest you get on that bandwagon when you’re ready. Read more about weight lifting and why its beneficial.
